Interview date: 09 June 2017

The Department of Sport and Exercise Science is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed individual to a full time permanent Lectureship in the area of Psychology of Physical Activity. The Department is based within the Faculty of Science and holds strong teaching and research links with many areas of the Faculty. The Department performed very well in the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), is ranked amongst the leading Sport and Exercise Science providers in the UK across all major University League Tables (e.g., 2nd in the UK in the recent Guardian University Guide), and has excellent student satisfaction (99% overall satisfaction in 2016). At an institutional level, we are in the top 2% of the world's universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016, and are one of the world's top 150 universities under 50.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Department across its teaching, research and innovation activities; this includes our undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional doctorate courses in Sport and Exercise Psychology. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in the full range of academic duties associated with a Lectureship; these include the ability to produce research to a standard that is REF returnable via collaboration within and outside the University, capability for grant capture and income generation, teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students (e.g., MRes, MPhil, PhD, Prof Doc) and a capability to contribute to the vocational relevance of our curriculum pathways in accordance with University strategy.

In addition to holding a PhD and having published in relevant peer-review journals, we are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are able to significantly contribute to our existing and emerging department-wide research strands (extreme environments, occupational and organisational research, exercise and well-being, injury and rehabilitation, skill acquisition and motor control). We would particularly welcome applicants with expertise in the exercise and well-being domain to support, for example, our clinical and mental health, occupational, or, exercise rehabilitation work.

Information on the Department of Sport and Exercise Science

The University of Portsmouth has delivered sport-related programmes for nearly 25 years. With several recent appointments, the department comprises in excess of 30 academic staff, ~750 Undergraduate and Postgraduate taught students, and ~25 postgraduate research students. Recent investments have supported our student learning experiences (which has contributed to the outstanding graduate-level first destination career statistics), our research environment, and we have planned physical and estate developments to extend beyond the current accommodation within the Spinnaker Building. The department enjoys a supportive environment for the development of excellence in its staff and students, and has recently been awarded an Athena SWAN bronze award, in addition to adhering to the Stonewall charter across the University.
