Job description

Maintenance Technician

Location: West Dean London, Dilke House, Bloomsbury
Department: Property & Facilities
Hours: 16 hours per week (Weekends Only)
Contract: Permanent

Help us keep a unique learning environment running

Are you a practical, hands-on maintenance professional who enjoys solving problems and takes pride in delivering high-quality work?

West Dean London is looking for a Maintenance Technician to join our Estates team, helping to maintain our historic college building in the heart of Bloomsbury. This is a varied weekend role where no two days are the same. From planned preventative maintenance and minor repairs to supporting compliance and ensuring our facilities remain safe and welcoming, you'll play an important part in creating an exceptional environment for our students, staff and visitors.

If you enjoy working independently, have experience across a range of maintenance disciplines and want to be part of a friendly and supportive team, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

Working alongside the Property and Facilities Manager and the wider Estates team, you will carry out a broad range of maintenance activities across the college. You'll respond to maintenance requests, complete planned preventative maintenance (PPM), undertake minor repairs and support the upkeep of our unique building.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out general maintenance, including decorating, carpentry, plumbing and minor electrical repairs.
  • Completing planned preventative maintenance to ensure the building remains compliant.
  • Conducting routine statutory checks, including fire alarm testing, emergency lighting tests, water temperature monitoring and Portable Appliance Testing (PAT).
  • Assisting with the maintenance of roofs, gutters and drainage systems.
  • Supporting external contractors and specialist engineers when required.
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records and compliance documentation.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to minimise disruption to students and staff.
  • Ensuring all work is carried out safely and in line with Health & Safety legislation.

About You

You'll be someone who enjoys fixing problems before they become bigger issues and takes real pride in maintaining high standards.

You'll have experience in general building maintenance, including decorating, carpentry, plumbing and minor electrical work. You'll have a good understanding of Health & Safety legislation and safe working practices, along with excellent communication and organisational skills. You'll be able to work independently, manage your own workload effectively and have strong attention to detail. Experience working within historic buildings would be an advantage but is not essential.

What We Offer

  • Permanent weekend role (16 hours per week).
  • Competitive salary in line with the current team.
  • 33 days' annual leave (pro rata), including Bank Holidays.
  • Contributory pension scheme.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Free and discounted places on West Dean College short courses.
  • The opportunity to work within a unique educational and heritage environment in central London.

Join West Dean

At West Dean, we are passionate about providing an inspiring environment for learning, creativity and conservation. Our Estates team plays a vital role in ensuring our buildings continue to support that mission.

If you're looking for a varied, rewarding maintenance role where your work makes a visible difference every day, we'd love to hear from you.
